Hanif Kureishi, Andrew O’Hagan, Rupert Thompson & Joe Stretch turn up to add that special sparkle to our Winter Event at London’s most unique non-corporate venue and help us launch To Hell with Journals ‘C’.

On a freezing cold Thursday in December 2008 To Hell with Publishing took up residence in the truly unique surroundings of MuTATE Brtain in East London. The result was To Hell’s now customary heady blend of readings, live music and DJ’s that saw many people still recovering well into 2009.

Serving their turntable duty this time were Ruffhouse DJs, The Wasted Faders and To Hell with Publishing house DJ Mike Funk while Psych-Guitar legend Onions added his very distinctive take on live music.

We were also blessed with readings by literary heavyweights Andrew O’Hagan and Rupert Thompson while cult newcomer Joe Stretch read form his debut novel and special guest Hanif Kureishi surprised everyone by reading from his modern classic The Buddha of Suburbia.

“As I am sure people aware, there is a dearth of translated literature published in the UK, and in my job as Rights Manager for Faber I consistently come across wonderful books from all over the world that ought to be available in the English language. This project then, is my own attempt to further expose that fact and to put a few names from a different selection of countries onto the wider public consciousness. A rather grand idea, but it all helps I feel.”

To Hell with Publishing is proud to announce that To Hell with Journals Edition ‘C’: Outside edited by Lisa Baker is now available.

The theme this time is translation and brings together works, both old and new, that have never appeared before in the English language. As our third instalment we at To Hell with Publishing are really excited by the hard work of Lisa India Baker and the selection she has made and are sure that you will find it enjoyable and return to it often.

Slam - Katinka Herbert

“Masks at the ready! As the UK prepares to be grappled, thrown, dazed and delighted by its first ever professional Lucha Libre – the dazzling bouts of Mexican wrestling that have hooked fans across the globe – a new book, Slam, (To Hell With Publishing ) brilliantly captures the extraordinary lives of the sports’ superstars.”

Renowned portrait photographer, Katinka Herbert has spent the last seven years documenting the luchadores, the heroes who fuse sport and showmanship into opium for the Mexican masses. The bouts – literally ‘free wrestling’ – combine the lurid escapism of Bollywood with the athleticism of premiership footballers and the traditional folklore of good against evil. Slam’s mesmerising reportage and portraits delves into the private and public lives of luchadores such as Fray Tormenta, the priest who turned to wrestling after a vision convinced him it would finance his orphanage. He now conducts weddings in his mask and was the influence for Jack Black’s Nacho Libre.
