The bouts – literally ‘free wrestling’ – combine the lurid escapism of Bollywood with the athleticism of premiership footballers and the traditional folklore of good against evil. Slam’s mesmerising reportage and portraits delves into the private and public lives of luchadores such as Fray Tormenta, the priest who turned to wrestling after a vision convinced him it would finance his orphanage. He now conducts weddings in his mask and was the influence for Jack Black’s Nacho Libre.
